Adventure is everywhere and you don’t have to be an expert anything to enjoy it. On Location takes you to all sorts of fun and challenging experiences, all so you can get up, get out, and Plant Your Flag.
Join experienced outdoorsman Sterling Fiock and his trusted Scottish Terrier sidekick Dogmatix on TV each week. Their mission is to find adventure and excitement (and snacks) wherever they can.
Our fearless host and his travel-sized companion go all over. The Pacific Northwest primarily, but that covers a lot of territory. According to Dogmatix, new smells and snacks makes getting there all the more fun.
With a satellite or cable television subscription, you can also watch the show on demand via the Destination America GO app, which can be accessed on iPhone/Apple, Android, Roku, Amazon Fire TV and Xbox One.

A man of many skills. Open to new experiences. Schooled in the ways of the wilderness. What more can we say? CLICK HERE to get the inside story on Sterling, straight from the man himself.
Can there be any wheaten Scottish Terrier as brave, strong, heroic and clever as the dynamic Dogmatix? Not according to his fans. To find out more about the always-modest Dogmatix, CLICK HERE.
You want to get out more often, see some new sights, walk some different trails, maybe push yourself a little bit with some new challenges. Great! You’ve come to the right place, and Sterling is your man on scene. CLICK HERE to check out his swag.
You’re ready for adventure, but you don’t know where to start, or what to expect? No worries. Sit back and tag along with Sterling. He’s got your back.
Always modest, Dogmatix agrees that yes in fact he is the bravest, smartest, fiercest and most loyal wheaten Scottish Terrier ever to honor TV screens. He knows this because his human assistant Sterling gives him plenty of snacks. CLICK HERE to check out his swag.
Do not be deceived by his small size. Every cubic inch of his compact Scottie body is solid muscle. His stubby little feet can run like the wind. And with his eagle-like eyes and teeth the size of a dog ten times his stature, Dogmatix is always ready for a new adventure.
A Plush Diamond, also known as the Oregon Sunstone, is a gemstone found only in Oregon. And guess what? There’s a Plush Diamond Mine in Oregon where you can sift through the gravel and keep all the sunstones you find. Very cool CLICK HERE for our Plush Diamond Mining swag.
At Spectrum Sunstone Mines, the mine operators scoop out the gravel, run it through a shaker and drop the big stuff on a conveyor belt. All you have to do is stand there and pick them up.
Get these beauties polished up and mounted and they can be worth thousands. And all you had to do was adventure out to Eastern Oregon and play in the dirt. Can’t get much better than that.
Raised on a ranch, Sterling enjoys learning how the pioneer settlers managed to do so much with basically no modern conveniences. The Fort Umpqua exhibit at the Elkton Community Education Center is a great place to experience this. CLICK HERE for our Heritage Gardening swag.
Back then on the farm what you didn't have were machines, gasoline or electricity. How did you make compost? Grab a pitchfork. How do you make flour? Turn the handle of that grain mill. At the ECEC, you can experience these things first hand.
Hard work pays off. Get a new appreciation for how far we’ve come. Just imagine having to do everything manually. Every day of the week. Forever. But hey, at least there's always snacks. Even if it is just cornmeal and pig fat (otherwise known as Johnnycakes).
The cool thing about this adventure is that with the right gear, some instruction, and a trail that’s been cleared of dangerous debris, anyone can climb their way up some pretty gnarly paths. CLICK HERE to check out our selection of 4x4 Rock Crawling swag.
Also known as Captain Safety, Sterling is always ready to join the Rim Butte Jeep Trail volunteer crew and help remove any potential hazards on the route.
According to Sterling, the Gambler 500 is a place to have fun and be a little crazy as long as you keep safety in mind. None of this is an issue for Dogmatix since that’s the way he rolls naturally. CLICK HERE to check out our Navigation Driving Challenge swag.
The official Gambler 500 rig for Sterling and his chum 'Boomer', unofficially known as the Captain Safety Mobile Command Post and Emergency Roadside Snack Chariot.
Gamblertown. Dusty, crowded, bumpy, loud, silly, and all kinds of fun. The Gambler 500 is truly a different kind of adventure.
From fish hatcheries and river rafting/fishing trips to the high-action activity of commercial fishing, Sterling and Dogmatix find a lot to be excited about. CLICK HERE for our Fishing swag.
A trip with Noah's Wilderness Adventures included peaceful floating, exciting rapids, impressive canyons, plenty of wildlife, and fishing! What could be better?
A long and satisfying day bass fishing with Big K Outfitters includes consistent catch and release. Dogmatix was really into it.
Sterling is not exactly a landlubber, but he would be the first to admit that trying to stand up on a 10-foot board, floating on the open ocean, takes some practice. Fortunately, he found some people who can help with that. CLICK HERE to check our our Cold Water Surfing swag.
Surfing off the Oregon coast is totally a situation where you need the right gear. With an average water temperature in the low 50’s, a good wet suit is top of the list. Good thing you can rent both wet suits and boards at the Lincoln City Surf Shop. Then, like Sterling, all you need is a sense of adventure.
Can confirm: if you’ve never been cold water surfing before you will no doubt end the day with aches in muscles you didn’t know you had. But balance that against an adventure well done and you’re still a winner.
These impressive and larger-than-life days kites do aerial tricks, fly precision maneuvers, and are so huge they could cover your house. And the best part is, with a little training anybody can still fly a kite. How awesome is that? CLICK HERE for our Kite Flying swag.
The big showstopper kites at the Lincoln City Summer Kite Festival need a whole team to lay them out and get them aloft. Sterling was able to help get the giant teddy bear 'Blueberry' airborne. Dogmatix was awestruck.
Sterling says that one of the great things about kite flying at the Lincoln City Summer Kite Festival is that you just can’t beat being out there on the beach with the wind blowing and everyone having a great time. And plenty of snacks on hand.
If you’ve always wanted to zoom over the waves like a porpoise and fly through the air like a bird AT THE SAME TIME, then kiteboarding is for you. There’s nothing quite so exhilarating as being able to harness the power of wind and wave, all at your command. CLICK HERE to check out our Kiteboarding swag.
Does the wind ever not blow at the ocean? Do the waves ever stop rolling in? Sterling is pretty sure the answer to both is “no”, which means kiteboarding at Floras Lake Kite & Windsurf is pretty much a year-round option.
Dogmatix isn’t quite certain he understands the attraction to travelling fast over large bodies of water, but he absolutely understands the thrill of a brisk breeze in his beard. And he appreciates that Floras Lake Kite & Windsurf is dog friendly.
These days hiking is a pleasant pastime, a way to get away from it all and get back to nature. 100 years ago, it was how you got from one town to another if you didn’t own a horse. In both cases having the right travel duds is important. CLICK HERE for our Keep on Hiking swag.
Sterling reminds would-be explorers to always be prepared, and recommends utilizing the 'Hikers 10 Essentials' commonly known to experienced hikers. This and more can be found in the helpful guide Hiking the PCT: Oregon by Eli Boschetto.
Dogmatix loves a good hike. Just him and his faithful human snack provider, Sterling. What a team. Oh the places they’ve been. Thanks in part to the trail maintenance provided by the Pacific Crest Trail Association.
Sterling respects that with all the cool things you can find at your local bike shop these days, the sport of mountain biking can be a thrilling, heart pounding activity not to be missed. Dogmatix, naturally, is along for the ride. CLICK HERE to check out our Mountain Biking swag.
The Pacific Northwest has some great biking trails that parallel what’s available for motorized vehicles but on a more human scale. Many of them happen to be located within the Middle Fork Ranger District of the Willamette National Forest.
Coasting down a bike trail, maneuvering the switchbacks, clearing the occasional pothole and fording a shallow stream. That’s the feeling of freedom. Oh, and manual labor alongside various biking clubs during National Trails Day.
